The death of Father Louis Charles Vermeersch, a retired priest of the Diocese of Saint John, occurred at his residence on Friday, March 17, 2017, at the age of ninety-six. Father Vermeersch was born in Westkerke, Oudenburg, Belgium, on July 17, 1920, the eldest of six children born to Jules Joseph Marie Vermeersch and Margaretha Magdalena Cloet. After philosophical studies in Belgium and theological studies in Japan, Father was ordained a priest in Toyko on May 14, 1953. He continued to serve in Japan as a teacher and editor of a Catholic magazine. He returned to Belgium in 1959 and was then sent by his Salesian superiors to Montreal, QC in 1960. Soon after he began teaching at College Don Bosco, in Jacquet River, NB, where he later became its director. In 1964 he was appointed chaplain of the Hospital l’Hôtel Dieu St. Joseph and its school of nursing in Campbellton. From 1969 he served as Pastor in South Bathurst and from 1975 as Pastor in East Bathurst. During these years, he continued to teach extension courses in both French and English in Campbellton, and through the University of Moncton, and later the University of New Brunswick Saint John. In 1980 when the Apostleship of the Sea was established, Father Vermeersch became Port Chaplain in Saint John. His multilingual ministry brought comfort to many seafarers from around the world. At the same time, he began ministering to the Francophone community in Saint John and in 1981 was appointed the founding Pastor of the newly established Paroisse St-François-de-Sales in Saint John. Along with some of his parishioners, Father petitioned the federal and provincial governments for increased services in Saint John for the Francophone community which resulted in the establishment of the Centre Scolaire Communautaire Samuel-de-Champlain in Millidgeville. Father was honoured for his work with the Francophone communities of New Brunswick with the awarding of an Honorary Doctorate by the University of New Brunswick in 1990. The same year Father retired as Pastor of Paroisse St-François-de-Sales, although he continued to strongly support this parish and other diocesan parishes as a retired priest. Father Vermeersch is survived by his sister Martha Pollet (Marcel, deceased 1996) and his brother Jozef (Nora, deceased 2008) as well as his sisters-in-law Suzanne (the late Achiel) and Irene (the late Hubert) and many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and nephews and great-grand-nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Gabriëlle, a missionary sister with the Salesians of Don Bosco to the Congo (deceased 2003), and his brothers Achiel (deceased 2014), and Hubert (deceased 2013). A son of Belgium, from a long tradition of farming, Father Vermeersch also became a son of New Brunswick, sowing the Word of God in the North, the South and on the high seas. May he now rest in peace!
Father Vermeersch will be resting in Église St-François-de-Sales, 77 Chemin Ragged Point, Saint John, with visiting on Tuesday, March 21, from 6 to 8 pm, and on Wednesday, March 22, from 2 to 8 pm with Solemn Vespers at 7 pm. His funeral Mass will be celebrated in the same church by Bishop Robert Harris on Thursday, March 23, at 3 pm followed by a reception in the Centre Scolaire Communautaire Samuel-de-Champlain. Interment will take place in the Priests’ Plot of St. Joseph’s Cemetery the following day. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Paroisse St-François-de-Sales. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Fitzpatrick’s Funeral Home. A Memorial Mass will also be celebrated in Father’s native parish, in Westkerke, Belgium, on Sunday, April 2, 2017.
